Snapshots of the Past makes reproductions of historical maps, photos and prints restored from Library of Congress archives. Founded in 2001, it says it was the first company to offer Library of Congress images as museum-quality fine-art reproduction prints. Its buyers have included over 200 bookstores and other retailers, as well as tens of thousands of online customers.

The company was selected as a vendor for the White House redecoration project in 2008. The reproductions use archival paper and pigmented inks; the company says they can be enjoyed for a lifetime and passed down through generations. Its other offerings include old Halloween, Mother's Day and Valentine's Day posters and early aerial views of Manhattan, Boston, Chicago and San Francisco.

Lithography, invented in 1796, helped make inexpensive mass-produced prints possible. The Library of Congress launched its American Memory pilot in 1989, laying the groundwork for the National Digital Library Program, which began in 1995 to digitize selected collections emphasizing the complexity of American cultural heritage.
