Lithography, invented in 1796, made inexpensive mass production of poster prints possible. A 1989 Library of Congress pilot project called American Memory laid the foundation for the National Digital Library Program, which began in 1995 and digitizes selected collections concerned with American cultural heritage.

These reproductions use fine-art and archival paper; prints made with archival paper and pigmented inks are intended to last for generations. The range includes old Halloween, Mother's Day and Valentine's Day posters and early aerial views of Manhattan, Boston, Chicago and San Francisco for display at home or work or as gifts.
