The company restores historical maps, photographs and prints from Library of Congress archives and reproduces them on archival paper with pigmented inks.

Snapshots of the Past was founded in 2001 and was the first company to offer Library of Congress images as fine-art reproduction prints. Its buyers have included over 200 bookstores and other retailers, as well as tens of thousands of online customers. It was selected as a vendor for the White House redecoration project of 2008.

Lithography was invented in 1796, allowing inexpensive mass production of prints. The Library of Congress began its American Memory pilot project in 1989; it laid the groundwork for the National Digital Library Program, which began in 1995 and digitizes selected collections on American cultural history. The company's reproduction prints are made for long-term display and can be given as gifts.
