Lithography was invented in 1796.

The Library of Congress started its American Memory pilot in 1989; that project laid the foundation for the National Digital Library Program, which began in 1995 and digitizes selected collections on American cultural history. The company's collection includes historical maps, photos and prints, among them holiday posters and early aerial views of Manhattan, Boston, Chicago and San Francisco.
