The brand makes reproductions of historical maps, photos and prints restored from Library of Congress archives, using archival paper and pigmented inks intended to last for generations. Founded in 2001, Snapshots of the Past says it was the first company to offer Library of Congress images as fine-art reproduction prints.

Its buyers have included over 200 bookstores and other retailers, as well as tens of thousands of internet customers. It was selected as a vendor for the White House redecoration project of 2008. Lithography, invented in 1796, made inexpensive mass-produced prints possible.

A Library of Congress pilot project called American Memory began in 1989 and laid the groundwork for the National Digital Library Program, which began in 1995 to digitize selected collections concerning American cultural history. The brand also offers reproductions of old holiday posters and early aerial views of cities for display at home or work or as gifts.
