Its buyers include over 200 bookstores and other retailers, along with tens of thousands of internet customers. It was selected as a vendor for the White House redecoration project of 2008. Lithography, invented in 1796, enabled inexpensive mass production of prints.

The Library of Congress launched its American Memory pilot project in 1989; the National Digital Library Program began in 1995 to digitize selected collections concerning American cultural history.
