Snapshots of the Past reproduces historical maps, photos and prints restored from Library of Congress archives, using fine-art and archival paper and pigmented inks intended to last for generations.

Founded in 2001, the company says it was the first to offer Library of Congress images as museum-quality fine-art reproduction prints. Its buyers include over 200 bookstores and other retailers, as well as tens of thousands of internet customers. It was selected as a vendor for the White House redecoration project in 2008.

The company also offers historical posters, including holiday designs and early aerial views of Manhattan, Boston, Chicago and San Francisco, for display or as gifts. Lithography, invented in 1796, made inexpensive mass production of prints possible.

In 1989, the Library of Congress began its American Memory pilot project, which laid the foundation for the National Digital Library Program launched in 1995. That program digitizes selected collections concerning American cultural heritage.
