The company makes home decor reproductions of historical maps, photos and prints restored from Library of Congress archives. Founded in 2001, Snapshots of the Past was the first company to offer Library of Congress images as museum-quality fine-art reproduction prints. Its buyers have included over 200 bookstores and other retailers, along with tens of thousands of internet customers. It was selected as a vendor for the White House redecoration project of 2008. Lithography, invented in 1796, helped make inexpensive mass production of poster prints possible. In 1989, the Library of Congress began an American Memory pilot project that laid the foundation for the National Digital Library Program, which began in 1995. The program digitizes selected Library collections concerning the complex history of American cultural heritage. The reproductions use fine-art and archival paper from respected industry brands. Archival paper and pigmented inks are intended to keep prints suitable for display over a lifetime and for passing down. The range includes old Halloween, Mother's Day and Valentine's Day posters, as well as early aerial views of Manhattan, Boston, Chicago and San Francisco. Retro-style posters can be displayed at home, in a study or at work, or given as gifts.
