Snapshots of the Past makes reproductions of historical maps, photos and prints restored from Library of Congress archives. Founded in 2001, it was the first company to offer Library of Congress images as museum-quality fine-art reproduction prints. Its buyers have included over 200 bookstores and other retailers, along with tens of thousands of internet customers.

The company was selected as a vendor for the White House redecoration project in 2008. Lithography, a printing technique that enabled inexpensive mass production of prints, was invented in 1796. The Library of Congress began its American Memory pilot project in 1989; it laid the groundwork for the National Digital Library Program, which began in 1995 to digitize selected collections emphasizing American cultural history.

Snapshots of the Past uses fine-art and archival paper for its reproductions. Prints made with archival paper and pigmented inks are intended to last for generations.
