Founded in 2001, Snapshots of the Past says it was the first company to offer Library of Congress images as museum-quality fine-art reproductions. Its buyers include over 200 bookstores and other retailers, along with tens of thousands of internet customers. It was selected as a vendor for the White House redecoration project of 2008. In 1796, lithography introduced a way to produce inexpensive posters in large quantities. The Library of Congress began its American Memory pilot project in 1989; that project laid the groundwork for the National Digital Library Program, which began in 1995. The program digitizes selected Library collections focused on the complexity of American cultural heritage. These reproductions use fine-art and archival paper from established industry brands. Prints made with archival paper and pigmented inks are intended to last a lifetime and be passed down through generations. The collection also includes old Halloween, Mother's Day and Valentine's Day posters, early aerial views of Manhattan, Boston, Chicago and San Francisco, and retro-style posters for a home, study or workplace. They can also be given as gifts.
