The company reproduces historical maps, photographs and prints restored from Library of Congress archives for home decor.

Founded in 2001, Snapshots of the Past says it was the first company to offer Library of Congress images as museum-quality fine-art reproduction prints. Its buyers have included over 200 bookstores and other retailers, as well as tens of thousands of online customers. It was selected as a vendor for the White House redecoration project of 2008.

Lithography, invented in 1796, helped make mass-produced poster prints inexpensive. In 1989, the Library of Congress began the American Memory pilot project, which laid the groundwork for the National Digital Library Program launched in 1995. That program digitizes selected collections concerning American cultural heritage.

These reproductions use archival paper and pigmented inks, which are intended to last a lifetime and be passed down. Other available subjects include old Halloween, Mother’s Day and Valentine’s Day posters, along with early aerial views of Manhattan, Boston, Chicago and San Francisco. The retro-style posters are offered for homes, studies and workplaces or as gifts.
