Snapshots of the Past restores historical maps, photos and prints from Library of Congress archives. Founded in 2001, the company says it was the first to offer Library of Congress images as museum-quality fine-art reproductions. Its buyers include over 200 bookstores and other retailers, along with tens of thousands of internet customers. It was selected as a vendor for the White House redecoration project of 2008. Lithography was invented in 1796 and made inexpensive mass production of prints possible. In 1989, the Library of Congress began its American Memory pilot project, which laid the groundwork for the National Digital Library Program launched in 1995. That program digitizes selected collections concerning American cultural history. The reproductions use fine-art archival paper and pigmented inks intended to last for generations. The range includes old Halloween, Mother's Day and Valentine's Day posters, early aerial views of Manhattan, Boston, Chicago and San Francisco, and retro-style prints for homes, studies or workplaces or as gifts.
