The company's historical map, photograph and print reproductions are restored from Library of Congress archives and made with archival paper and pigmented inks intended to last for generations. Snapshots of the Past was founded in 2001 and says it was the first company to offer Library of Congress images as fine-art reproduction prints.

Its buyers have included over 200 bookstores and other retailers, along with tens of thousands of online customers. It was selected as a vendor for the 2008 White House redecoration project. Lithography, a technique that enabled inexpensive mass-produced prints, was invented in 1796.

The Library of Congress began its American Memory pilot project in 1989; that project laid the groundwork for the National Digital Library Program, which began in 1995 and digitizes selected collections concerning American cultural heritage. The seller also offers historical holiday posters and early aerial city views as decor or gifts.
