The company reproduces historical maps, photos and prints restored from Library of Congress archives using archival paper and pigmented inks intended to last for generations. Founded in 2001, it says it was the first company to offer Library of Congress images as museum-quality fine-art prints. Its buyers have included over 200 bookstores and other retailers, tens of thousands of online customers, and the White House redecoration project of 2008. Lithography, invented in 1796, made inexpensive mass production of prints possible. A 1989 Library of Congress pilot project called American Memory laid the groundwork for the National Digital Library Program, begun in 1995 to digitize selected collections concerning American cultural history. The collection also includes old Halloween, Mother's Day and Valentine's Day posters and early aerial views of Manhattan, Boston, Chicago and San Francisco for display at home, in a study or at work, or as gifts.
