The company reproduces historical maps, photographs and prints restored from Library of Congress archives, using fine art and archival paper with pigmented inks intended to last for generations. Founded in 2001, Snapshots of the Past was the first company to offer Library of Congress images as museum-quality fine art reproduction prints.
Its customers have included over 200 bookstores and other retailers, as well as tens of thousands of online buyers. It was selected as a vendor for the White House redecoration project in 2008. Lithography, invented in 1796, helped make inexpensive mass-produced prints possible.
A 1989 Library of Congress pilot project called American Memory laid the groundwork for the National Digital Library Program, which began in 1995 and digitizes selected collections about American cultural history. The company's range also includes holiday posters and early aerial views of cities such as Manhattan, Boston, Chicago and San Francisco for display at home or work or as gifts.
