Founded in 2001, it was the first company to offer Library of Congress images as fine-art reproduction prints. Its buyers include over 200 bookstores and other retailers, along with tens of thousands of online customers. The company was selected as a vendor for the White House redecoration project of 2008. Lithography, invented in 1796, made inexpensive mass-produced prints possible. The Library of Congress launched its American Memory pilot project in 1989, laying the groundwork for the National Digital Library Program, which began in 1995 and digitizes selected collections concerning American cultural history. Snapshots of the Past uses fine-art archival paper and pigmented inks for prints intended to last for generations. Its collection includes older Halloween, Mother's Day, and Valentine's Day posters, as well as early aerial views of Manhattan, Boston, Chicago, and San Francisco. The prints can be displayed at home or at work or given as gifts.
