Perla M Guerrero Nuevo South Hardcover sku-55831318

Perla M Guerrero's hardcover Nuevo South: Latinas/os, Asians, and the Remaking of Place is listed under United States History Books. It compares how Latinas/os and Asians have changed understandings of race and place in the contemporary American South, where a Black/white binary has long shaped regional history.

Guerrero examines the reception of Vietnamese refugees and Cuban and Mexican migrants in northwestern Arkansas communities that were almost entirely white until the mid-1970s. She describes reluctant acceptance of Vietnamese as former US allies, rejection of Cubans through labels tied to communism, crime and sexuality, and the portrayal of Mexicans as “illegal aliens” and invaders as they became more visible.

Her political, economic and social analysis considers work in the poultry industry alongside local histories of anti-Black violence and racial cleansing. SKU: sku-55831318.
