The case was 250 years old in 2015. In 1762, the Earl of Halifax sent Nathan Carrington and three other King's messengers to John Entick's house in Stepney.
They broke in, seized his papers and caused significant damage because Entick was said to have written seditious papers published in the Monitor. Entick sued the messengers for trespass. They argued that the Earl's authority justified their actions, but Lord Camden ruled for Entick: a Secretary of State's warrant could not make otherwise unlawful acts lawful.
The collection brings together public lawyers' reflections on the case's history, its rule-of-law principles and their broader implications.
