No rating yet(0 ratings)Mary H Wagner's Gustav Mahler and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra Tour America is listed under Musical Instruction as sku-28908882. In 1909, Mahler joined the troubled orchestra and introduced regular rehearsals, a season of forty-six concerts that tripled the previous number, and tours.
During the final two years of his life, he worked to make it the best orchestra in the country and the equal of any in the world. The book documents the 1909 and 1910 tours, including preparations, travel conditions, concert outcomes and responses from audiences beyond New York City.
Drawing on more than 1,000 articles, it covers the planning and reception of the Philharmonic's first tour outside New York. It describes Mahler's decision to join the orchestra, his programs for American audiences and the one hundred musicians employed on tour.
Those programs included Wagner, Strauss, Berlioz and Bach, whom many audience members had never heard performed by a full romantic orchestra. The book also gives a history of touring and orchestral development at the turn of the twentieth century.
