Goya Bewitched: A Drawings Album Reunited is a paperback in All Books by Stephanie Buck; Juliet Wilson-Bareau (sku-44513919). It focuses on Album D, known as the 'Witches and Old Women' album. Page 3, Cantar y bailar (Singing and dancing), is in The Courtauld Gallery's collection of Spanish drawings. The catalogue brings together the surviving pages, numbered up to 23, and proposes a reconstruction that includes sheets whose page numbers were erased or trimmed away. Goya began making his drawing 'journal albums' relatively late in life, after an illness left him deaf before age fifty. He continued until his death, producing eight albums, A to H, with a total of some 550 drawings. Each album has its own subject matter, style and technique, with distinct supports; all but the first are paginated. Goya used the pages to record his views on people and the world around him, sometimes adding written comments. The albums' later history remains under investigation. Goya's son remounted the disbound sheets in large volumes, and his grandson sold them together. Federico de Madrazo and Valentín Carderera dispersed the sheets in the 1860s and 1870s, leaving gaps in every album. The exhibition and research on Album D serve as a pilot for an international project to reconstruct Goya's graphic oeuvre. The publication examines Album D's extent, possible sequence and thematic coherence.
