No rating yet(0 ratings)French Aircraft Carriers, 1910-2000 is an Unbranded listing categorized as Ages 3-5 Kids' Books. By John Jordan and Jean Moulin, it is described as the first comprehensive English-language study of French aircraft carriers, combining technical and historical coverage with over 200 photos, illustrations, and specially commissioned artwork.
It traces their development from early seaplane tenders to the nuclear-powered Charles de Gaulle. The Foudre was designed to carry torpedo boats before its conversion to a seaplane carrier. During World War I, requisitioned merchant ships supported aircraft, and the former sloop Bapaume became the first French ship to launch wheeled aircraft while underway.
After the Washington Treaty of 1922 prevented completion of traditional capital ships, France converted the incomplete battleship Béarn into an experimental carrier. The book covers fifteen paper designs from 1929 to 1936 and examines the tactical rationale and service history of Commandant Teste, the only aviation ship added to the interwar French navy.
The purpose-designed Joffre and Painlevé were ordered before World War II but were never completed after the 1940 Armistice. Wartime design work led to the proposed PA28 Clemenceau of 1948, canceled in 1949 because of its cost. France instead acquired four secondhand ships from Britain and the USA: Dixmude, Arromanches, Lafayette, and Bois Belleau.
They served in the postwar conflict in French Indochina. After budgeting and planning delays, the French navy obtained its first modern, domestically built carriers, Clemenceau in 1961 and Foch in 1963. Their development and service histories are a major focus. The final chapters cover Charles de Gaulle, and an epilogue discusses French Navy plans for future naval aviation.
Jordan edits the Warship annual and has written monographs on French battleships, cruisers, destroyers, and armored cruisers. Moulin has written books and monographs on French warships; they previously collaborated on French Cruisers and French Destroyers. SKU: sku-15963108530. ISBN: 9781682477908.
