Flying with Wax Wings: Josef Mánes (1820–1871) is a paperback in All Books by Pavla Machalíková (sku-5452750298). Josef Mánes (1820–71) was a painter, draftsman, decorator, and maker of models for applied art and architecture. Czech revivalist society looked to him to create a national art. An enfant terrible of the domestic art scene, he was both a disgraced artist and an entertaining companion. He was idealized and profaned in different cultural and political contexts. Drawing on research by a collective of authors with varied approaches, the book examines the many depictions of Mánes. It places this central figure in nineteenth-century Czech art in the context of European art of his time, viewed from the perspective of art history today. The book offers a contemporary reassessment of a canonized artist and is billed as the first monograph on Mánes to present his life and work without distortion.
