Kristin D Pickering's Environmental Preservation and the Grey Cliffs Conflict: Negotiating Common Narratives, Values, and Ethos is a hardcover in All Books (sku-5145585691). It examines negotiations between the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and a Tennessee community over Grey Cliffs, a Corps-managed recreational lake area affected by environmental degradation and unauthorized use.

The Corps considered closing it; residents wanted it kept open. Different cultural values and accounts of the dispute divided them, but a lengthy effort to develop shared narratives, values and ethos helped them reach an agreement. Grey Cliffs remains open to all.

Using field notes, participant interviews and texts from the dispute, Pickering applies rhetorical analysis and grounded theory to regulation, identity, sustainability and community values. She writes from the perspective of a new community member and a specialist in technical communication and professional writing.

The book offers recommendations for resolving local environmental conflicts, particularly for readers in technical and professional communication, organizational communication, environmental science and public policy.
