Polly Ha English Presbyterianism sku-14558859 Hardcover
No rating yet(0 ratings)Polly Ha's English Presbyterianism, 1590-1640 is a hardcover Religion & Religious Studies Books title. It challenges the account that English presbyterianism disappeared after the crown arrested movement leaders in 1592, before returning during the English Civil War. English presbyterians had emerged in the 1570s as a threat to the Church of England.
Ha argues that they stayed active through the following half century, seeking an alliance with common lawyers against episcopal authority while arguing that their church government was compatible with royal supremacy. They pressed for further reform of the Church of England; by the early seventeenth century, they had also contributed to the emergence of 'independency' and puritan appeals to neo-Roman views of liberty.
