Samira Haj: Reconfiguring Islamic Tradition sku-54360281

Samira Haj's Reconfiguring Islamic Tradition: Reform, Rationality, and Modernity is a hardcover in the Cultural Memory in the Present series, listed under Religion & Religious Studies Books, SKU sku-54360281. Haj reads the works of Muhammad ibn 'Abdul Wahhab (1703–1787) and Muhammad 'Abduh (1849–1905) as distinct chronological and philosophical trends in modern Islam.

She examines their ideas of the modern and the formation of a Muslim subject, and questions divisions between modern and traditional, secular and sacred, and liberal and fundamentalist. The book also considers community, society and the subject's place within them, showing how Muslims in different historical contexts responded to theological and practical questions.

Haj relates that history to current conflicts in parts of the Arab world.
