Gregg Barak All Books: Radical Criminologist sku-642056818

In Chronicles of a Radical Criminologist: Working the Margins of Law, Power, and Justice, Gregg Barak gives a scholarly, first-person account of his work from the late 1960s to the present. Barak has spent five decades as an author, editor and book review editor, mostly writing in traditional academic prose.

Here he uses his experiences and earlier work to examine debates among radical, critical and technocratic criminologies and radical criminology's challenge to mainstream developments. The hardcover's seven chapters are divided into three parts: academic freedom, academic activism and academic praxis.

They follow his career in Berkeley, Las Vegas, Chicago, Alabama, Ann Arbor and elsewhere in the United States. Barak writes about resisting crimes of the powerful and working locally for social justice, including efforts concerning abortion and homosexuality laws, protections against domestic violence and sexual assault, racism and classism in criminal justice, the wars on gangs, drugs and immigrants, mass incarceration, and the treatment of juvenile offenders.
