Lina del Castillo: Crafting a Republic sku-510404483

Lina del Castillo's Crafting a Republic for the World is a hardcover listed under Latin American History Books. It examines how Colombia's post-independence public sphere described the Spanish colonial past. Leaders identified gaps in geographic knowledge, barriers to a circulatory political economy, land-tenure patterns, inequality and limited education among popular sectors as colonial legacies.

They worked together and clashed over how to build a republic amid monarchies and empires. Despite partisan divisions, republicans presented Colombia as a nation that had abolished slavery and included Indians as citizens, in contrast to the United States.

By the mid-nineteenth century, suffrage had expanded to all males over twenty-one, while elites revised territorial divisions and constitutions in response to their concerns about voters. The book traces contributions to geography, cartography, political ethnography, constitutional science, history and land-reform calculations of equity.

It argues that these efforts produced legal pluralism reminiscent of the Spanish monarchy. SKU sku-510404483.
