Its forged tool-steel head weighs 3.5 lbs and has hand-sharpened bits for cutting and splitting. ANSI standards specify bit hardness of Rc 45 to 60 at least 1/2 inch from the cutting edge; Council Tool specifies Rc 48 to 55 and targets 1-1/4 inches from the edge.
The head and cutting edges have a natural steel finish. The 36-inch American hickory handle has an eye section dried to below 10% moisture to limit shrinkage. The head is hydraulically seated and secured with a serrated aluminum wedge in a tapered eye. About 1/2 inch of the handle's overall length is removed during assembly.
