No rating yet(0 ratings)Listed under Thomas Haemmerli; Brigitte Ulmer as sku-5063411004 in Big and Tall Jeans, Circle! Square! Progress! is a paperback about the Zurich Concretists. Rooted in the Bauhaus, the movement changed the formal language of art, influenced design and architecture, and took political positions.
The illustrated book follows Max Bill, Camille Graeser, Verena Loewensberg and Richard Paul Lohse, a group brought together by circumstance rather than a shared conspiracy. It covers their clashes with critics, institutions and authorities; their links to Constructivist–Concrete art; and influences from graphic art, advertising, jazz, dance, color theory and mathematics.
It also depicts debates in Zurich's bohemian cafés and celebrations at the annual artists' fancy dress ball, then traces the group's successes in the 1960s, violent quarrels in the 1970s and disputes about form. Once reviled, ridiculed and ignored, the Zurich Concretists are now considered, alongside Dada, among the most important art movements to originate in Switzerland.
