Jane C Sugarman Musical Instruction Book sku-32728974

Engendering Song by Jane C Sugarman is a mixed media Musical Instruction title in the Chicago Studies in Ethnomusicology series (Series #1997), SKU sku-32728974. Sugarman describes Prespa Albanian weddings in Macedonia and diaspora communities, where festivities last days or weeks and singing is central to social life.

Using photographs, song texts, recordings and her own descriptions, she examines how singing shapes gendered identity and relations of power. The book also considers music and gender, music in diaspora cultures, and the social formation of self and subjectivity.
