No rating yet(0 ratings)This All Music listing, sku-15960704724, is a book on interpreting ancient texts, particularly the Yoga-sutras attributed to Patanjali. Its title also names the Yoga-Bhashya attributed to Veda-Vyasa and the Tattva-Vaicaradi of Vachaspati-Micra. The book examines authorship and dating, places the Yoga-sutras between the 3rd and 5th centuries AD, and analyzes their philosophical concepts across four books. It discusses substance (dravya) and qualities (guna) in relation to parts and groups. It presents evidence placing Patanjali between the 4th and 5th centuries AD, the Yoga-bhasya between the 4th and 7th centuries AD, and Vacaspatimicra's work in the 9th century AD. These dates inform its discussion of Yoga and Nyaya. Its subjects are psychology and yoga. Translator James Haughton Woods (1864-1935) studied in Europe and India before returning to Harvard in 1903. A professor of Indian philosophy and a pioneer of Asian studies at Harvard, he translated Paul Deussen's work. He later expanded his focus to Buddhism and East Asia, advocated for faculty positions and established the Harvard-Yenching Institute. His scholarly and institutional contributions continued beyond his lifetime.
