No rating yet(0 ratings)Apostles of Modernity: Saint-Simonians and the Civilizing Mission in Algeria is a hardcover World History Books title by Osama Abi-Mershed. It examines how French army officers in the colonial Offices of Arab Affairs shaped political decision-making in Algeria between 1830 and 1870.
Guided by Saint-Simonian modernizing ideas, they developed and implemented a framework for governing Algeria's Muslim and European populations. The book traces the evolution of that civilizing mission and argues that these 40 years shaped the main ideological tenets of French colonization in the region.
It reconsiders 19th-century French colonial history through the effects of Europe's rise on non-elite Middle Easterners and North Africans, the imposition and local adoption of European cultural norms, and the colonial encounter's effects on colonizers' cultural identities.
