It examines the Bible's changing texts and formats as American publishing grew after the Revolution, including the production of over 1,700 American editions.
Gutjahr traces how religious and secular groups, including publishers, clergy, politicians, educators and laypeople, changed the Bible's form and content while seeking to preserve its place in the expanding print market. He considers the cultural effects of those disputes.
In a quoted assessment, Jay Fliegelman of Stanford University discusses the book's account of textual revision and the emergence of new gospels and fictionalized writing about Christ.
