It is the first substantial English-language book on the self-taught photographer since the 1930s. Biermann (1898-1933) became a leading figure in German avant-garde photography in the 1920s and 1930s and took part in many major exhibitions of her time.
Her photographs of plants, objects, people and everyday scenes use clear structures, precise light and contrast, and close framing. Published to coincide with a fall 2021 exhibition at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, the large-format book contains around one hundred photographs reproduced in color and quadrotone. Some come from her family's archive and are published here for the first time.
