To use the blocks, remove their protective oil or petroleum jelly, clean them and join them into a stack of the required size.
They are calibrated at 20 °C (68 °F) and should be kept at that temperature during measurement to limit thermal expansion. Where possible, harder wear-resistant blocks, such as tungsten carbide blocks, go at the ends of the stack to protect it. Gauge blocks were invented in 1896 by Swedish mechanic Carl Edvard Johansson.
They serve as length references for calibrating machine-shop measuring devices, including micrometers, sine bars and calipers.
