No rating yet(0 reviews)A Delicate Aggression: Savagery and Survival in the Iowa Writers' Workshop is a hardcover book by David O Dowling, listed in All Books as sku-239650124. It traces the Iowa Writers' Workshop, founded in 1936, and its often controversial history. Its alumni and faculty include twenty-eight Pulitzer Prize winners, six U.S. poet laureates and numerous National Book Award winners.
Dowling follows the program's rise in the early 1940s under director Paul Engle, who promoted classroom peer criticism as preparation for editorial and critical scrutiny in publishing. The method fostered competition and community, cooperation and rivalry. The book discusses participants including Flannery O'Connor, Dylan Thomas, Kurt Vonnegut, Jane Smiley, Sandra Cisneros, T. C.
Boyle and Marilynne Robinson, and examines the workshop's influence on professional authorship, publishing and American literature.
