Nellore inscriptions Wall Art collection | sku-15977305233
No rating yet(0 ratings)Listed as Wall Art under SKU sku-15977305233, A Collection of the Inscriptions on Copper-Plates and Stones in the Nellore District is a history work in three volumes. It collects about 903 stone and copper-plate inscriptions from South India, chiefly the Nellore District as it existed in 1903. Apart from one exception, it excludes inscriptions later than the eighteenth century.
Copper plate No. 24, a seventh-century grant by Western Chalukyan King Vikramaditya I, begins the district's epigraphical history. It records the gift of an unidentified village. If the grant concerns Nellore, it suggests the Western Chalukyans displaced the Pallavas from this part of the east coast. The inscriptions provide material for regional history.
Volume 1 covers Atmakur Taluk, Darsi Division, Gudur Taluk, and Kandukur Taluk. Volume II covers Kainigiri Taluk, Kavali Taluk, Nellore Taluk, and Ongole Taluk. Volume III covers Podili Division, Rapur Taluk, Sulurpet Division, Udaygiri Taluk, and Venkatagiri Division. Alan Butterworth, born in 1864, was a British-born author and an Indian civil servant during the British colonial period.
His works include A Collection of the Inscriptions on Copper-Plates and Stones in the Nellore District (1905), Some Madras Trees (1911), The Southlands of Siva, and Memoirs of a Serial Hiller. Venugopal Chetty, Vengal, earned a B.A. from Christian College, Madras, in 1886 and later attended Christ's College, Cambridge.
He joined the I.C.S. as Assistant Collector in 1890, became Collector and District Magistrate in 1897, and became Sessions Judge in 1901. He also wrote Inscriptions in Nellore.
