Part of the Treasures of the U.S. series, it represents Virginia among the 50 states; the series uses natural items in its coins, with state-themed illustrations and information. Virginia was home to Chief Powhatan, father of Pocahontas, before European arrival. Jamestown became the first permanent English settlement in America in 1607.

The state was the setting for Patrick Henry's 'Give me liberty or give me death' speech and Cornwallis's surrender to Washington at Yorktown. More Civil War battles were fought in Virginia than in any other state, and many battlegrounds are now national historic sites visited by thousands each year. Eight U.S. presidents, including Washington, Jefferson, and Madison, were born there.

Luray Caverns, a national landmark, are described as the largest caverns in the eastern United States. Giant's Hall has golden columns reaching 10 stories; iron and clay in water seeping through the ground contribute to the color.

Calcite is a carbonate mineral, the most stable polymorph of calcium carbonate, and a common constituent of sedimentary rocks, particularly limestone formed in part from marine shells.
