Saratoga National Historical Park, in Stillwater, New York, preserves the site of the Battles of Saratoga, described as the first significant American military victory of the Revolutionary War. Saratoga derives from a Mohawk word used for hunting grounds along the Hudson River; the town's history gives "serachtague," meaning 'the hillside country of the quiet river,' as its source.

The Mohawk are an Iroquoian-speaking people and one of the original members of the Iroquois League, known as Keepers of the Eastern Door. Their historical homeland centered on the Mohawk River valley and extended into neighboring regions.
