Shawnee National Forest covers approximately 280,000 acres of federally managed land in the Ozark and Shawnee Hills of southern Illinois and is administered by the U.S.D.A. Forest Service. The Algonquian-speaking Shawnee are closely related to the Sauk, Fox and Kickapoo.

Shawnee derives from “Shawunogi,” meaning “People of the South”; the Shawnee also call themselves Shawano, from the Menominee word “Sawanoh,” meaning south. At one time, as many as 4,000 Shawnee lived in the Midwest. By 1825, their numbers had fallen following hostilities with other Native American groups and Euro-American settlers.

They lived near Shawneetown from 1746 to 1748 and at Fort Massac from June to October 1759, lending their name to the area. Camel Rock, in the Garden of the Gods Recreation Area, is named for its camel-like shape and is one of Illinois’ most photographed places.

Illinois was named after the Illinois River, which French explorer Robert Cavelier Sieur de La Salle named in 1679 after people living along its banks. Illinois is the French spelling of “iliniwok,” meaning men or warriors.
