The New Zealand Mint produced the coin under Fiji's authority. Hawksbill turtles live in tropical Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Ocean waters, especially near coasts and coral reefs where they eat sponges. Their narrow beaks and overlapping shell scales distinguish them.

They migrate between feeding and nesting areas, including from Fiji to New Zealand, where sightings are mainly in the upper North Island but extend as far south as Cook Strait. The species is critically endangered, largely because of human activity; its eggs, flesh and shells are still taken despite international protection.
