Louis Chevrolet and ousted General Motors founder William C. Durant founded the Chevrolet Motor Car Company on November 3, 1911.
Durant used it to acquire a controlling stake in General Motors through a reverse merger on May 2, 1918, returning to the GM presidency. After Durant's second ousting in 1919, Alfred Sloan chose Chevrolet as GM's volume brand, following his maxim "a car for every purse and purpose."
Chevrolet sold mainstream cars against Henry Ford's Model T in 1919 and overtook Ford as the best-selling car in the United States by 1929. Durant introduced the Chevrolet bowtie logo in late 1913. The Chevrolet Story, a company publication from 1961, says he conceived it after seeing a repeating wallpaper pattern in a French hotel in 1908.
He tore off a piece of the Sport Wallpapers to show friends, thinking it would make a good car nameplate. In a 1986 issue of Chevrolet Pro Management Magazine, Durant's widow Catherine gave a different account: while they were on holiday in Hot Springs, Virginia, in 1912, Durant saw a newspaper design in their hotel room and said, "I think this would be a very good emblem for the Chevrolet."
She did not clarify what the motif was or how it was used.
