This hardcover book reinterprets the process leading to Mexican independence in 1821 through Mexico's continuity with Spanish political culture. It describes New Spain as the Spanish Monarchy's most populous, richest and most developed territory in its final decades of Spanish rule.
Most novohispanos favored union because of their religious, social, economic and political ties to the Monarchy. The book argues that neither the American and French Revolutions nor the Hidalgo Revolt of September 1810 and later insurgencies caused independence.
It traces the Hispanic Constitution of 1812 to Napoleon's invasion of Spain in 1808 and says Mexico declared independence after Spain's government rejected the new constitutional arrangements. It reads the Mexican Constitution of 1824 as affirming independence while retaining Spanish political culture.
