The artwork draws on gyotaku, a Japanese fish-printing art that began in the early 1800s. Fish were printed on rice paper using natural berry inks to record the size and species of prized catches before photography was available there. Early prints used one color; later prints used more colors. The method reproduces the fish's features and characteristics.
