Unbranded Silver 8 Reales Fragment sku-18693060845

This Unbranded Silver fragment comes from an 8 reales cob recovered from the c.1630 Spice Islands shipwreck. It contains around .25 oz of silver, depending on fragment size, and shows substantial saltwater damage. Sizes vary. The obverse shows the arms of Castille and Leon separated by a long cross; the reverse shows a crowned Hapsburg shield.

It comes in protective plastic with a certificate of authenticity describing the wreck. Whether the vessel was a pirate ship or a merchant ship is unknown. After it became stuck and too damaged to continue, the crew set it on fire and scuttled its contents; their reason is unclear. Silver recovered from the wreck suggests a substantial loss to its owner. Listed under Collectible Coins and Bullion.
